Review : Flanagan's Restaurant, Dublin 1

O'Connell Street rarely trips off the tongue when recommending restaurants, unless you like your food fast and cheap.  Thankfully there's now a real option for well cooked, great quality food on this once fine street with the arrival of Flanagan's Restaurant.  Just steps from Henry Street and the GPO, it opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a very tourist-friendly menu featuring Irish ingredients such as Jameson infused salmon and Irish Stew.

We had a quick dinner midweek on the way to a concert in the 3Arena and chose two courses from a set menu on offer that evening.  A shot of vibrant gazpacho arrived at the table before our mains, full of fresh summery flavours.  My fillet of plaice was a generous breadcrumbed piece with a substantial serving of root vegetable mash, tenderstem broccoli and very creamy mashed potatoes - perfect pre-beer at a concert food.  Russell's ribeye steak was cooked medium as requested with a well dressed salad and crisp chips.

As we passed on starters, we opted for desserts instead.  Flanagan's, I'd like your bread and butter pudding recipe as it was exceptionally good.  Layers of thin bread sandwiched with a vanilla flecked custard and scattered with raisins came together to create a rich but very light dessert which lay in a puddle of creme anglaise.  There was a battle royal over it - and I adopted guerilla tactics and stole the plate.  The icecream sundae wasn't quite to my taste, but Ru loved it.   We were also impressed by the friendly, attentive service.

The set menu offers two courses for €18.50 and three courses for €22.00 - great value for good food.  With jazz nights in the Speakeasy bar at weekends, Flanagan's is breathing a new lease of life into an area sorely lacking anything but fries with that.
