Brown Hound Bakery is tucked away in a retail development in Drogheda, Co. Louth. From the outside, it looks very innocuous but walk through the doors and you're in a long elegant room with a glass counter full of unusual and delicious cakes, scones and other delights. There's also a very handsome statue of a Brown Hound and many covetable cake stands... all securely behind glass.
The Brown Hound...
Everything is labelled beautifully and creatively, and I must confess a pang of envy every time I go in because I want everything. And I mean everything... from the ribbon which adorns the cakes to the glass domes, it's all so bloody tasteful. I envy Jeni & Reuben!
Parmesan & Chive Biscuit
There are also low tables and chairs where you can sit, have a great coffee and eat some of Brown Hound's baked delights. Last Saturday we were on our way to Belfast and it's a condition of me driving that we have to stop there for breakfast. We kept it simple - based on a tweet from co-owner Jeni, I couldn't resist a Parmesan & Chive biscuit and a flat white. The Hubs opted for a Buttermilk biscuit with butter and jam, and tea.
Afterwards, we decided that we "needed" to bring some cake with us, so we haggled over which 4 petite treats were coming home... Chocolate Paradise, Boston Cream, Whistler and Baxter were the chosen ones and we split them equally. I can't actually tell you which I preferred because they were all divine.
If you're driving up the M1, do yourself a favour and stop off. You won't regret it...
