Anyway, back to business. Today I was baking birthday cakes for twin boys who are 10 tomorrow. Believe it or not, one of my Twitter friends had seen Ethan's Blue Birthday Cake and contacted me to see if I would make something similar for her boys. James wanted a cake just like Ethan's with chocolate sponge, blue icing and lots of Maltesers. Patrick had different ideas and wanted a red sponge, green icing and lashings and lashings of Minstrels.

Making the cakes is surprisingly easy - it's an all in one recipe so you just throw everything into the food mixer and blend. The red cake is the same recipe except you replace the cocoa with the same quantity of flour and add about a teaspoon of red food gel colouring. I much prefer these to liquid food colourings as they don't make the cake mixture runny.

The original cake and icing recipe is here and if you want to change the colour of the icing, just use white chocolate and add gel colour to transform the white icing into whatever you want.
Hope the boys love them!
There are some little (and not so little) people here at Hunters Lodge who are very much liking the pics of your cakes! Where do you get gel colouring? I only have the liquid colouring here and Ellie would like to try working with the gel..
ReplyDeleteHello Dillon ladies! I have a collection of gel colours which I've bought online (Wilton) and in Kitchen Complements and Avoca. Closer to you, try Allens or The Cakeshop on Dublin Street - I'm positive they both have them in stock
ReplyDeleteThanks Aoife :)
ReplyDeleteOOH, yummy looking cakes. Am I too old at 36 to have a birthday cake like that? Congrats on the blog awards nomination too :)
ReplyDeleteThose cakes look really nice! Although there appears to be a fly on the green one :S hehe!
