Just Say Yes

A few weeks ago I was in the car with Lulu to buy her birthday present (more of that later) when we passed the official Yes bus. She looked at me and asked me how I was going to vote in the upcoming Marriage Referendum on Friday. I was a bit taken aback that she even knew there was a vote and turned the tables, asking her how she thought I should vote. Straight away, she said “you have to vote Yes, why on earth would you vote No?”. If a 9 year old girl can grasp the importance of marriage equality, then it’s pretty simple.

I am married. To a man. Because I am a woman. All good so far, according to the Vote No campaign.  But, we don’t have children. Therefore my marriage shouldn’t be as important as a (naturally) fertile couple. The same goes for my many friends who are also married to the opposite sex but have gone through IVF or adoption to have their much loved and cherished children.

What makes me more special than anybody else? Why should I be entitled to be legally married, but not my friends? We are all the same and should all be treated equally.  Or equalitea as my very talented friend Karen created.

Please use your vote on Friday. And remember that you’re voting for your friends and family.  I'll let my nails do the talking...
