The world has always been full of foragers, whether it's just collecting blackberries in the autumn (from as high up as you can to avoid little doggie spray surprises...) or picking wild garlic in the spring. Right now, it's the buzzword du jour and terribly fashionable indeed. It's actually a lot of common sense if you know what you're doing, so leave the mushrooms to the experts and concentrate on finding food that you can eat safely. Anyway, enough of my sound advice. Rosehips on a Kitchen Table landed on my kitchen table last week and it's all about foraging and growing your own. It's a very cute book, compact enough to keep on your kitchen counter, but packed with recipes to appeal to all levels of knowledge.
When we were kids, the only use for rosehips we had was to split them in two and drop one down the back of an unsuspecting sibling or friend, rubbing the open side into their skin before running away as fast as we could. They were known as itchybacks and my goodness, you knew all about their itching properties if it happened to you! No such antics in this book - rosehips are turned into a sweet jelly and a syrup which could form the base of a lot of very appealing cocktails. There's a recipe for sloe gin too - perfect! With sections including Rich Pickings, Gleaning, Grow Your Own and What On Earth Do I Do With This?, the recipes are simple, well written and illustrated with really appealing photographs and line drawings which add life to the book.
